Decorative Ironwork is our blacksmithing course where students ages 9+ learn to shape hot metal safely while building real skill and confidence at the anvil. Students explore the full story of metal—from mining and metallurgy to forge fundamentals—using both coal and propane forges to heat, move, and form steel with control. Along the way, they experience the “from scratch” side of the craft by smelting steel and learning foundry basics like casting aluminum.

Apprentice Levels

  • We use "Apprentice Levels" in addition to whole-group instruction to guide student learning. Think of this like the martial-arts "belt" system of the blacksmithing world!

  • Levels are:

    • Apprentice I

    • Apprentice II

    • Journeyman

    • Master

FAQ

  • Proper attire (see next FAQ for specifics)

  • Waterbottle

  • Snack

  • For full-day students, bring a lunch!

What materials do I need for class?

Safe blacksmithing attire looks like:

  • Natural-fiber clothing (think cotton, denim)

  • Long pants (jeans are fine!) NO shorts!

  • Sturdy closed-toe shoes (work boots are best). NO Crocs!

  • Long hair tied back

  • No loose jewelry

NO SYNTHETICS! This includes polyester and most athleticwear like leggings and performance tees. Plastics do not play nice with heat.

What clothing does my child need?

What is half-day vs. full day, and what is hybrid?

Watch THIS video to learn more. Your child will also need to be present for 90 hours or more each semester!

I want to use state funding for this class. What is required?
